Don’t take this world for granite,
the villages say,
but that stone’s sunk before,
they’re stoopin’ low as bedrock
for the fun. Down in the deep dark
under the flower bed,
we be pushing daisies
’til the creepers turn in lazy,
then we stir up bones
in the shadows of the oaks,
torching our swords
on the signpost horde
for the dragon at the end
of a secret: you ain’t granite,
you’re tuff, andesite of you
on the bastions
makes ghasts weep
and mountain goats sing.
