Hunger

If a newborn has not yet eaten their first meal,

do they know if they are hungry?

Do they know that what they want, is food?

Kits mewl, pups squeal, babies cry–

“my tummy aches, I don’t like this, give me something I have never had,

to satisfy me.”

I do not know what I need

to satisfy this thing in me,

but my tummy aches, I don’t like this,

is this what “hunger” means?

I am hunting for something I have never had,

I don’t know what,

but something to taste

or maybe to feel,

to flow warm down my throat and behind my lungs

just enough

to fill this empty hollow inside me.
