(part 1 of Can’t Catch Me Now)
Legend has it
our ancestors
came crawling from the ocean
to avoid a whirlpool
and built log huts to sleep in
then never left.
Legend has it,
the whirlpool came
from an angered sea god,
and legend says
a land god gave our
ancestors legs and lungs
to flee
and legend says
the two gods
were twins
who could no longer abide each other’s interests
so a fire god
had to separate them
and from its forge, the god gifted us
tools to build our homes
so the other gods couldn’t
claim us anymore.
Legend has it
natural evolution instead
brought us out of the seas
to escape predators
but legend also has it
some scientists
tested out legs first
then brought the rest of us along–
legend says
a lot of things
that cannot all be true
so I went searching
not because I really wanted to know
if sea gods were real
but mostly just
to get away
and that’s the start
of the legend of the girl
who left the land of log huts
and all her ancestry
to chase after freedom.
