Is royal “we” a form of gaslighting?
Like, yes, peasant, we think you
should pay more taxes,
you’re outnumbered.
Yes, the collective group think
has decided,
and you’re the minority vote.
Listen,
we have your best interest
in mind,
your needs will be considered
as a fraction of our pie.
But hey, I totally speak this way
in my head,
we’re going to get up out of bed
today we’re going to eat a healthy meal
today we’re going to exercise today
and smile at someone
even if it’s just
our
reflection in the mirror,
to tell ourselves
this pantheon of experiences,
feelings and dreams
all wants to get better
and the part that’s not united
with us,
that wants to weep away the day
for no real reason at all,
is just
a slice of life
and not our defining feature
because
we decreed it so.
Is royal “we”
gaslighting?
I don’t know.
But this nation of my body
could believe in a little more light today
so here we go.
