So I don’t usually do anything like write posts about music albums, but…I’ve been listening to this album multiple times a week since it was released in June, 2024 (see: I’m obsessed with it). And it feels incredibly important to, like, humanity. So I wanted to make a post about it.
The music essentially asks, what has happened to human emotion? To empathy? To anything less than cold logic? What happened to our souls?
It’s the eclectic, mix-of-genres album, What Happened to the Heart? by AURORA.
I listen to this a lot while I’m writing, so if you’re also someone who listens to music while writing, might I suggest this album? I’m generally a big fan of Aurora’s music, and this album is probably my favorite that she’s released up to this point.
Also, these are clever song titles? For example, “Echo of My Shadow.” “Some Type of Skin.” “When the Dark Dresses Lightly.”
And the lyrics are amazing too–here’s some of my favorite lines:
“You speak of the devil/Like he’s not your friend/When the world starts to burn/Give the water to him”
“You prepared for battle as you fell apart”
“There are heroes within us, there are lovers around us/They will be here forever”
If I had to pick my top 3 songs from the album…well, my ranking probably depends on the day. The whole back half is insanely good (in my opinion). But today, I’d probably go with “A Soul with No King,” (the remix featuring Nature herself is also iconic) “Starvation,” and “My Body is Not Mine.”
What about you, have you listened to these before? What are your favorites?
