By “wreck me” I mean, leave me so emotionally riveted that I just lie on the floor and cry my eyes out as I hear the song for the first time.
A Different Kind of Human by AURORA did that to me.
Let’s start with a particular comment on the video: “As an autistic person, I can’t begin to describe how much this song speaks to me.”
I, Jordyn, writer of this article, am not officially diagnosed with autism (we could go down the rabbit hole of counseling and personal experiences, but I won’t), but I understand this sentiment. This song speaks to a part of my soul I didn’t know needed spoken to.
I spent a lot of time trying to write my thoughts and express what I mean when I say this song speaks to my soul. The best I could do was this short article.
Part 1
A Different Kind of Human tells about some benevolent aliens coming to earth and taking you into their mothership. They’re here to take you home. I don’t know what it is about that, but it sounds beautiful.
In the chorus of this song (post-chorus, I guess), Aurora sings in a made up language. I have no words for this part, because it’s not words. It’s feelings. Just…it’s like the feeling that you’ve never quite belonged somewhere before, but you’ve always yearned to, like a magnet drawn somewhere you just weren’t sure where.
It’s like you have a compass needle pointing north, but as you walk you never quite find what you’re looking for. This song, this chorus, are like the stars telling you that you’re going the right way. You’ll find your way home, you’ll find where you belong.
Part 2: random tidbits
That “higher, higher” part? Love that.
Aurora’s voice is amazing. The harmonies on the chorus I love.
The rhythmic drums of the post-chorus…they make me want to dance like my heartbeat is the conduit of this sound.
